Drilling Down to Data Points Based on Multiple Attributes

Drilling Down to Past Reporting Dates

Introduction

The drilldown options of the PatentSight BI allow you to take a closer look at any data point of interest that you encounter within a chart or a table. The options also allow you to drill into data points from past Reporting Dates or into intersections between more two or more data points. All you need to do is click on a data point of interest and select a drilldown option of your choice.

Drilldown Options

Depending on your use case, you can select between four options to perform a drilldown to a data point of interest.

The following drilldown options are available for all attributes (e.g., Owner, Patent Family or Filing Year):

In addition, the following drilldown option is available for attributes that have a level structure (e.g., IPC or Technology Clusters):

Each drilldown option adds the respective search condition(s) to your search query in order to narrow down the search results to the data point of interest. Depending on the option selected, the search query is adjusted either in the search panel of the same sheet (→ "Add to this search") or it creates a new sheet with an adjusted search query (all other drilldown options).

Option 1: “Add to this search"

The drilldown option “Add to this search” adds the search condition(s) that relate to the selected data point to the search panel of the current sheet.

1. Define your search query (here: “IPC=(D03)”) and create a chart or a table (here: the template “Patent Asset Index Trend”).

2. Click on a data point of interest (here: the owner “Sanko Holding”) and select the option “Add to this search”.

3. Click on the refresh button of the search panel to rerun the search.

The search condition “AND Owner=(Sanko Holding)” has been added to the search panel of the present sheet, thereby narrowing down the initial result set to patent families owned by Sanko Holding.

Option 2: "Drilldown to Template"

The drilldown option “Drilldown to template” creates a new sheet and adds the search condition(s) that relate to the selected data point to the search panel of the new sheet.

1. Define your search query (here: “IPC=(D03)”) and create a chart or a table (here: the template “Patent Asset Index Trend”).

2. Click on a data point of interest (here: the owner “Sanko Holding”) and select the option “Drilldown to template”.

A new sheet called “Drilldown” has been created and the search condition “AND Owner=(Sanko Holding)” has been added to the search panel of the new sheet.

On the new sheet, you can select a template (here: "International Protection") or create a chart or table from scratch via "Insert" to analyze the data point used for the drilldown.

Option 3: "Drilldown to Result List"

The drilldown option “Drilldown to Result List” creates a new sheet and adds the search condition(s) that relate to the selected data point to the search panel of the new sheet. Moreover, it automatically applies the template “Result List” to the new sheet.

1. Define your search query (here: “IPC=(D03)”) and create a chart or a table (here: the template “Patent Asset Index Trend”).

2. Click on a data point of interest (here: the owner “Sanko Holding”) and select the option “Drilldown to Result List”.

A new sheet called “Result List” has been created and the search condition “AND Owner=(Sanko Holding)” has been added to the search panel of the new sheet. Moreover, the template “Result List” has been applied to the new sheet.

Option 4: "Drilldown to lower level"

The drilldown option “Drilldown to lower level” is only available for charts that are grouped by one of the following attributes:

  • IPC
  • CPC
  • F-Terms
  • Technology Clusters

This drilldown option creates a new sheet and adds the search condition(s) that relate to the selected data point to the search panel of the new sheet. Moreover, on the new sheet, this drilldown option builds the same chart and groups it by the lower level of the same attribute.

For example, using the option “Drilldown to lower level” for the data point “H04L” in a chart that is grouped by “IPC Level 3” will have the following effects:

  • A new sheet will be created.
  • On the new sheet, the condition “AND IPC=(H04L)” will be added to the search query.
  • The new sheet will contain the same chart as the one used for the drilldown.
  • The chart will be grouped by the “IPC Level 4” (which is one level below “IPC Level 3”).

1. Define your search query (here: “Owner=(RELX)”) and create a chart (here: the template “Patent Asset Index ranking”).

2. Click on a data point of interest (here: the IPC “H04L”) and select the option “Drilldown to lower level”.

A new sheet called “H04L” has been created and the search condition “AND IPC=(H04L)” has been added to the search panel of the new sheet. Moreover, the same pie chart has been created on the new sheet. The new pie chart is sliced by "IPC (smart) - Level 4" (i.e., the level below the initial slicing "IPC (smart) - Level 3").

Drilling Down to Data Points Based on Multiple Attributes

Some charts and tables may contain data points that are the intersection of two or more attributes.

In a matrix chart, for example, every data point is an intersection between the attribute used on the x-axis and the attribute used on the y-axis.

The above example shows that the owner “RELX” owns 5 patent families that are active in China (“CN”) and belong to the Technology Cluster “Language processing”.

To drill down to these 5 patent families that are active in China (“CN”) and belong to the Technology Cluster “Language processing”, you can click directly on the bubble and select one of the drilldown options available (here:
→ “Drilldown to Result List”).

Since the bubble selected for the drilldown is based on the two attributes “CN” and “Language processing”, these two conditions have been added to the search panel of the new sheet created.

The same applies for the drilldown from tables that are grouped by more than one attribute. A drilldown of a table row will include all attributes in this row (here: “USA”, “2005”, and “Search query”).

Drilling Down to Past Reporting Dates

If your chart or table includes the Reporting Date, you can drill down to past Reporting Dates that will be applied to the search panel.

For example, line charts (here: the template “Portfolio Size trend”) may include the Reporting Date on the x-axis to display development over time.

The above example shows that, at the Reporting Date 12/31/2009, the owner “Company A” owned nearly 2,000 active patent families belonging to the IPC “F02”.

To drill down to these nearly  2,000 patent families belonging to “F02” that were active at the past Reporting Date 12/31/2009, you can click directly on the line and select one of the drilldown options available (here:
→ “Drilldown to template”).

Since the point on the line selected for the drilldown is based on the attribute “F02” and on the Reporting Date 12/31/2009, these two conditions have been applied to the search panel of the new sheet created.

In the new sheet called “Drilldown”, the search condition “AND IPC=(F02)” has been added to the search panel and the Reporting Date of the search panel has been set back to “12/31/2009”.
